Dental Inlays and Onlays

Inlays and Onlays: Strong, Subtle Restorations

What Are Inlays and Onlays?

Inlays and onlays are custom-made restorations for moderate tooth damage that’s too extensive for a filling but doesn’t require a full crown. Made from porcelain or composite resin, inlays fit within the tooth’s cusps (chewing surfaces), while onlays cover one or more cusps. They preserve more natural tooth structure than crowns, offering durability and a natural look.

Why It Matters

When a tooth is too damaged for a filling but not severe enough for a crown, inlays and onlays provide a perfect balance. They restore strength for chewing, protect against further decay or cracks, and blend seamlessly with your smile, making them ideal for back teeth that endure heavy biting forces.

When Might You Need It?

  • A tooth has moderate decay, cracks, or large cavities that a standard filling can’t handle.
  • Your tooth is weakened by trauma or grinding but has enough healthy structure to avoid a crown.
  • You experience sensitivity or discomfort when chewing, indicating damage to the chewing surface.
  • You want a durable, less invasive restoration for back teeth used heavily for eating.
  • Your gums are healthy, and the tooth can support the restoration, as confirmed by an exam.
  • We’ll ensure your tooth is suitable for this treatment.

    What to Expect

    The process involves two visits:

  • Preparation: Dr. Patel removes the damaged or decayed area under local anesthesia and shapes the tooth to accommodate the inlay or onlay. Impressions ensure a perfect fit, and a temporary restoration may be placed.
  • Fabrication: Your custom inlay or onlay is crafted over 2-3 weeks to match your tooth’s shape and color.
  • Fitting: In the second visit (1-2 hours), we remove the temporary, bond the permanent restoration with dental adhesive, and adjust for comfort and bite alignment.

We’ll guide you through care to keep your restoration strong.

  • Recovery Tips

    • Sensitivity: Mild sensitivity to temperature or pressure may last 1–3 days. Use desensitizing toothpaste and a soft diet (e.g., pasta, bananas) to ease discomfort.
    • Diet: Avoid hard or sticky foods for a week to ensure the adhesive sets properly.
    • Hygiene: Brush and floss daily to prevent plaque buildup around the restoration.
    • Longevity: Inlays and onlays last 10–15 years with good care and regular checkups.
    • Contact Us: Call if sensitivity persists, the restoration feels loose, or bite issues arise for adjustments.

Your inlay or onlay will restore your tooth’s strength and beauty.
